Come experience songs of exceptional beauty rooted in traditions ranging widely across time and place. Brahms’ Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy songs) reflect the composer’s deep affection for spirited Roma music, using texts based on Hungarian folk songs. Elder’s inspirations for Three Nocturnes include the 14th c. ballades of Guillaume de Machaut and the Shakespearean sonnet. American roots underlie the remaining program: Paulus based “The Road Home” on a folk tune from The Southern Harmony Songbook, while American poets inspired NEC-trained composers Bosba Panh (e.e. cummings) and Charles Tarver (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow). This concert is part of the Newton Festival of the Arts.
