New Music Director - Search is Closed

Commonwealth Chorale is in the process of selecting a new Music Director who will begin at the start of our 2022-2023 season.  We are an established 80-member, auditioned chorus in Greater Boston. Our repertoire spans five centuries of classical music, including a cappella as well as orchestral pieces in collaboration with professional soloists and instrumentalists. Rehearsals are Tuesday nights in Newton, MA, with three annual performances in the Boston area.  Please visit our website for more insight into who we are:  The target selection date is early Spring of 2022.  

Job Description


  • Master’s degree in choral conducting or an equivalent combination of education and comparable work experience.

  • 3 or more years of experience in choral and instrumental conducting beyond graduate studies.

  • Experience conducting amateur choral groups of 50 or more.

  • Ability to provide documentation to support budget preparation for season’s programs.

  • Strong leadership, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience.

  • Located in or has immediate plans to relocate to greater Boston.


  • Music director will provide essential leadership skills efficiently managing rehearsal time with attention to detail and broad perspective. 

  • Facility in developing a strong working relationship with a rehearsal pianist.

  • Facility cultivating a diverse membership and audience and selecting a diverse repertoire within the classical genre.

  • Proficiency with music related technology and on-line resources to support music learning, rehearsals, and performances.

  • Familiar with fundraising techniques and requirements of grant administration.

  • Passion for teaching, leading, and developing singers of different abilities and integrating them into a cohesive sound.

  • Vision to help broaden musical skills and repertoire.



Music preparation and performance: 

  • Conduct weekly rehearsals and arrange for a substitute conductor in the music director’s absence. 

  • Ensure timely distribution of study recordings or other music learning aids; provide on-going encouragement and effective strategies for practicing outside of rehearsals.

  • Organize sectionals and occasional additional rehearsals as needed. 

  • Ensure rehearsals combine incremental progress with positive encouragement balanced with development of choral excellence.

  • Prepare instrumentalists and soloists for concerts.

  • Plan and conduct annual three concert series in cooperation and consultation with the board of directors.

  • Determine the instrumentalists, soloists and rental/sheet music needs for each concert and submit a budget to the board of directors for approval before each concert season. 

  • Make the finance committee aware of any changes which might affect the cost of a concert.

  • Ensure on-going timely communication and collaboration with the finance committee and/or the board regarding significant changes to the approved concert program.

  • Hold auditions in September and January to admit new Commonwealth Chorale members and re-audition members periodically.

Community Interaction

  • Collaborate in the Commonwealth Chorale’s community engagement efforts. 

  • Be available to interact with the audience before and/or after concerts.

  • Represent the chorale at community and arts organization meetings.

  • Collaborate with community and artistic organizations for performances.


  • Hire and supervise paid section leaders as authorized by the board.

  • Commission new works in cooperation with the board.

  • Attend meetings of the board of directors and other committees as requested.

  • Maintain positive relationships with Commonwealth Chorale membership and the board through effective and timely oral and written interpersonal communications, including post-concert reviews.

  • Promote community building within the chorus.

  • Work with the board to facilitate donor relationships and giving, including grant and foundation applications.

Compensation commensurate with experience.  The position is at will and has no benefits.
