An exclusive evening with Commonwealth Chorale & the New England Philharmonic
Grand Mass in E-flat major by Amy Beach
A Commonwealth Composer concert and concert talk
Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 8:00pm
Church of the Holy Name, 1689 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA
Join us for one of the most exciting concerts in our 42-year history, as Commonwealth Chorale presents the first major choral and orchestral work to be premiered in the U.S. by an American woman composer. At its premiere 125 years ago by the Handel & Haydn Society, Amy Beach’s majestic Grand Mass was enthusiastically received, but it has rarely been performed since 1892 because it lacked a legible full orchestral score—till now.
Music scholar Matthew Phelps has created a critical edition of the full score and given Commonwealth Chorale the right of first performance in Boston. Dr. Phelps will be at the concert and will share his insights about the piece with our audience.
We are honored to team with the internationally-renowned New England Philharmonic to reintroduce the Greater Boston community to this important work and place it firmly in the classical choral repertoire. We encourage you to get your tickets early as this performance may sell out.
