Section Leader Jobs
Job Description
Note: all positions are currently filled..
- Rehearsals are most Tuesday evenings from 7:15pm-9:45pm at the First Baptist Church in Newton Center (easily accessible by T on the Green Line D branch). Rehearsals run from September through November, then January through early May.
- Concert dates for 2024-2025 are:
- Sunday, November 24, 2024 @ 4:00pm
- Saturday, March 8, 2025 (afternoon rehearsal & 7:00pm performance)
- Saturday, May 10, 2025 @ 8pm (date still to be confirmed)
- Dress rehearsals during concert weeks are on Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:30pm-10:00pm; the dress rehearsal dates for the March concert likely will be different.
- Pay is $40/hour for rehearsals and concerts. Pay for concerts is guaranteed to be for at least three hours; pay is at the $40/hr rate if the concert and related rehearsals run longer than three hours.
- There may be solo opportunities. Solo pay is a minimum additional $50 and may increase, depending on the number and length of solo selections that are performed.
- Depending on the comfort level of the section leader, you may be asked to lead sectional rehearsals outside of the regular rehearsal schedule (these are paid at $40/hour).
Qualifications
- Ability to sing both as an ensemble member and as a soloist.
- Ability to lead the voice section, but also blend in with others around them.
- Preparation of music ahead of time to help lead others in their section.
- Strong reading skills.
- Willingness to integrate into the Commonwealth Chorale community, engaging with others in the chorus.

Audition
Select applicants will be asked to audition for the Artistic Director. Auditionees should prepare two short pieces in contrasting style that demonstrate the applicant's voice at its best. A pianist will be provided. Applicants will be asked to sight-sing. Applicants may be asked to prepare one or two short excerpts from solos from the upcoming season.
